Is it your hair, your skin, your eyes, your style? What should it be? We live in a society that is obsessed with outward appearance; beauty, clothing, attractiveness, etc. While style and beauty are not inherently bad they shouldn’t be our main concern. It’s pretty clear that our culture has made an idol of beauty. 1st Samuel 16:1-7 really resonated with me a few years back. God has Samuel here going to anoint David as King of Israel. Samuel doesn’t know who he is going to anoint and David wasn’t who he expected God to choose. We see in verse 6 that Samuel actually expected that it was Eliab. In verse 7 God tells Samuel “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man see; for a man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1st Samuel 16:7) How beautiful and convicting all at the same time. God looks at our hearts, his concern is not how society rates our beauty. His concern is how beautiful our hearts are in comparison to his word. Proverbs 31:30 tell us “Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised” is your heart the most beautiful thing about you? Know that God loves you and doesn’t value you based upon your physical beauty. We are all made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27) The more our hearts align with his word, the more that Christ is seen in us, the more beautiful we become. Eternally beautiful.
