A Lesson on Listening

Recently I was driving down the road intently listening to a podcast while my oldest began to talk to me. I would acknowledge her here and there with a “uh huh” or ” I don’t know” not giving much thought to what she was saying or asking. She really got my attention when she said “Mama, your not even listening to me!” The truth filled statement immediately got my attention and in turn I turned the podcast off and apologized to her for my inattention. I think you’d be interested to know her response which was “It’s okay Mama but try not to do it again, okay?” The truth I received that day sponsored by my 3 year old brought me to think deeper on listening. Are we actively listening to God or are we just nodding our head, going through the motions and never allowing his word to penetrate our hearts and transform our minds? In Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus has some things to say to us about listening. He says this ” Therefore whoever hears these saying of mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these saying of mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27 NKJV) These words of Jesus make me sit up straight and examine where I’m not allowing his word to penetrate my heart. This is serious, God did not give us the ability to read his word, pray, and be in fellowship with other believers for us to only go through the motions. He wants us to listen to his authoritative words, allow them to penetrate our hearts, and change our lives so that he may use us as a means to tell others about HIM. We are made to honor and glorify HIM! Are you listening? Is the Holy Spirit calling you? Remove the distractions and give him your full attention!
