“So if the son sets you free, you will be free indeed” – John 8:36

True freedom is found in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Freedom from sin and ultimately freedom from death. In John chapter 8 verses 34-36 Jesus says “Very Truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Sin enslaves us, too often we think we find freedom in chasing our sinful desires. However, when we choose our flesh over the truth of God we are choosing to make ourselves a slave to our sin. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus. Jesus came to give us freedom. Who He sets free, is free indeed. Too often we view God’s instruction as rules that hinder us from “living our best life”, as if God is trying to keep us from something good. I know the devil uses this tactic to try to pervert our view of God, I’ve experienced it myself. I want to tell you truly God has your best interest in mind. The instructions he gives us to live by are protection from the harm of sin. There are always consequences to sin but Christ died to set us free and to make the way to escape eternal condemnation for the sin we commit. He wants to set you free! The fleeting pleasure we experience here from sin will not compare to the eternal joy of being in the presence of God for those who know him as Lord and Savior! It seems backwards, but much of what God does seems backwards to our sinful minds. He created the heavens and the earth, he has all power, yet he sent Jesus Christ to earth to live a humble life. He could have come in all his glory but he chose to be embodied by flesh and face temptation like us. Tell me any other “god” who came to serve and not be served to the point of excruciating death for people made in his image. Freedom is found in surrender, freedom is found in Jesus Christ. Grow in Grace!
